The Bisque: Ultimate Transition Food

The bisque can be the savior of your juice fast. Transitioning from a regular diet of food to just juice for 30 days can be challenging and many people do not make it past a few days for a number of reasons. We certainly need food and sometimes that urge to eat can be incredibly strong to the point where you are ready to eat anything in sight.

When you are that hungry, juice fasting is an unpleasant experience and you’ll need to either eat, OR maybe go with a bisque to help get you over the hump. There are some great things about using bisques during transition.

  • They are fast and easy to make
  • It’s very easy to calculate the calories
  • They can keep you from giving up on a juice fast
  • They are healthy
  • They are savory

Our bodies are used to eating food everyday, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for the most part. Switching from food to juice is not going be easy for some people and your overall experience with juice fasting can be a significant factor in the appropriateness of your approach. We “transition” to a juice fast for a reason and the bisque fits rather nicely in the transition period and can save the day – for quite a few days until you get into the rhythm of your juice fast.

It’s easy to feel motivated and ready to tackle it when your belly is full. It’s not so easy to tackle it when your haven’t prepared ahead of time, your body is lacking essential nutrients and of course you are really, really, hungry. Juice fasting is NOT about starving yourself. It is about making a significant change to the quality of fuel that your are giving your body AND temporarily, the “way” your are getting that fuel.

If you are trying your first 30 day  juice fasting regimen and you’re feeling really hungry in the initial days, you may very well benefit from using a bisque once or twice a day.

Potato Zucchini Bisque

How long should you use bisques?

Well, that really depends on how you have prepared and how you feel. Once you are out of transitioning and are into your fast, a bisque will  break your fast. But, perhaps you are only a day or two in the fast and you are feeling like you could eat the back end of a dead rhino! I would say it’s time to drop back into transition and hook up a bisque. It may be that you are just not ready to move to just juice, especially if  you are struggling.

Hunger is quite normal on a fast and comes and goes, but the real thing you want to watch for is the consistent almost unbearable hunger, combined with constantly thinking about food. In addition – irritability, anxiousness and apathy are also hallmarks of not quite being ready for the juice fast.

That means you need to eat or you need to continue to transition. Make sure that you are getting yourself plenty of fresh juice everyday for a little longer before you try to move out of transition. Although juice fasting for 30 days requires discipline, it is not completely about will power or trying to force your body to do something that it is really not ready to do. You “train” you body to get it’s fuel from juice. If you do it right, eventually it will fall in line with what you are trying to do and you will be on your way.

Braggs Liquid Aminos

Braggs Liquid Aminos

I use Braggs Liquid Amino Acids and Tapatio Hot Sauce to flavor up mine a bit. You can also add herbs and spices of whatever sort to your taste. Avoid using any dairy products. If you are using any kind of leafy greens in your bisque, in order to get the maximum nutritional value out of them don’t overcook them.

Since they can actually be eaten raw, you really only need to soften them up a little the last few minutes of boiling (if that). You may also choose to boil only the harder vegetables, like the potatoes or squash and put your green veggies in the blender raw. It’s just a matter of preference.
